BVW Round 3 - Ice Block Artists - Design Decisions
The first version of Ice Block Artists was shown to the class when it still did not include any kind of audience interaction. We received good feedback on its simplicity, but also some encouragement to add more interactions, particularly with the audience. The introduction of the Beyond Question Remotes introduced two aspects that worked against the simplicity we were going for: it asked more of our programmer and also required audience memebers that may not be technology-savvy to press buttons. Programming proved to be simple, so we got around the audience issue by limiting the interaction to a simple three-choice voting, also adding a graphic tutorial and reinforcing it with a live explanation.
The game was backed up by two performers who explained the perks of the Playmotion! to the guests and also helped with theming by wearing winter clothes and dressing the guests with gloves and scarves. The mix of simplicity, a tutorial stage and reinforcement on the mechanics by the performers helped this game perform very well under testing by naive guests.
